About Joe Michelli
I presently reside in Yaroomba near the town of Coolum Beach on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
I have been consistently producing art work for a good portion of my life. I hold a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and an Art Education Certificate from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago.
I was born and raised in the city of Chicago, but since 1996 I live and work in Australia .
My artistic influences are pretty eclectic. I am thoroughly steeped in the history of western art from ancient to modern and I have explored thoroughly the art of Islam, ancient Greek, Roman, Sumerian and Egyptian art as well. My work can vary from the abstract to the strictly academic, from the surreal to the illustrative. I paint what I feel like painting in whatever style I wish. Within these parameters though you will see a consistency of approach. My academic background and extensive travel throughout the world informs my work on a continual basis.
My classicizing influences are due to my time as a curitorial intern at The Art Institute of Chicago's Classical/Oriental Department in 1987. During that time, I organised a variety of displays in the AIC. I handled maintenance and conservation of exhibits and was also responsible for organising and inventorying the McNear collection of Islamic and Indian miniature paintings. I was given the privilege of curating an exhibition of Japanese prints at the AIC under the direction of Dr. Isamu Ueda.
I have exhibited at three different galleries as well as the odd show here and there.
I have roughly 3,000 works on paper including paintings, drawings, prints and various mixed media. Then there are the oil paintings on canvas, paper and board. I also have numerous sculpture in cast bronze, aluminum, silver, brass, gold, as well as ceramic, I am also a jeweler with an extensive number of pieces that I have cast and fabricated in silver, gold, copper and bronze. But wait, I am also a video editor with work on YouTube and on my website. I have not factored in all of the photographic work which runs into the thousands also...
